With this kind of stairs you should have a space all the way to the back wall. It also sometimes goes around the corner too

There is a small lip above the carpet on the banister. To avoid the carpet rubbing when lifted, we trim a thin piece of the carpet to allow free movement.

You don't appear to have the void of space we use for the install. We can however remove a small section of the wall and open up the space in to the existing cupboard. A new sperating wall could be added in future.
